PUTRAJAYA – In a bid to enhance the retail industry’s data landscape, the Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA) recently visited the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), led by Deputy President Dato’ Liew Bin. The meeting with YBhg. Dato’ Sri Dr. Mohd Uzir Mahidin, Chief Statistician of Malaysia, marked a pivotal step in fostering a strategic partnership aimed at refining data collection and analysis specific to the retail sector.

MRCA, which represents over 500 retail businesses across Malaysia, has long championed the need for more targeted, retail-specific data. DOSM, known for its reliable and user-oriented statistics, plays a crucial role in guiding national policy-making and development planning through the provision of accurate and timely data.

During the visit, both parties discussed a new survey focused on key retail areas such as brick-and-mortar retail, food and beverage, e-commerce, digitalisation, and franchise expansion. By tapping into MRCA’s extensive network, the survey will provide valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of Malaysia’s retail landscape. The aim is to support businesses with precise data, enabling informed decisions and sustainable growth.

Dato’ Liew Bin underscored the importance of data-driven strategies for the retail sector, stating, “Accurate data is essential for businesses to adapt to market changes. Our partnership with DOSM is a milestone in equipping the industry with the right insights to fuel growth.”

Dr. Mohd Uzir shared similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for reliable and detailed data to drive Malaysia’s economic progress. “Our collaboration with MRCA will produce a robust statistical framework tailored to the retail sector, which will support local business sustainability and strengthen Malaysia’s position as a prime destination for franchise expansion,” he remarked.

A key outcome of this collaboration is the ability to attract industry players to significant events like the Franchise Expo Malaysia (FEM). Set to take place from August 21st to 23rd at the KL Convention Centre, the event serves as a major platform for franchise leaders, investors, and policymakers to engage in networking and knowledge exchange.

The ongoing partnership between MRCA and DOSM will also include follow-up meetings and workshops to assess the effectiveness of the survey and adapt strategies based on initial findings. This commitment to continuous improvement highlights both parties’ dedication to fostering innovation in Malaysia’s retail sector.

By refining data collection methods and aligning with the National Development Policy (NDP), this collaboration aims to bring long-term benefits, including improved policy formulation, enhanced business support, and a rapidly evolving retail ecosystem.

Present at the meeting were MRCA’s Secretary General Michael Liew, Deputy Treasurer General Christine Tan, Media Head and Council Member Stan Singh, and Secretariat member Sheetal Kaur.
